We all know that certain celebrities are fond of going under the needle – no, we don’t mean plastic surgery, we mean tattoos. From Chris Brown’s bizarre “sugar skull” on his neck to Cheryl Cole’s expansive rose design on her lower back and bum, celebrities get almost as much coverage for their tattoos as they do for their talent.

Still, celebrity tattoos have the ability to shock us and get us talking, none more so than some of these.

The Irish singer and outspoken activist recently stepped out with a little something on her face – a big B and a big Q. We don’t think she did it to get discounts on home decorating supplies from a certain DIY shop, but her explanation doesn’t really make much more sense. On her website, she mysteriously wrote, “Brendan Quinlan, It is what it is … un ange passé. There’s a bottle of Agent Provocateur in someone’s room that belongs to me.”

Miley Cyrus’s forearm portrait

We all love our grandmothers, and we like to pay tribute to them in many different ways. In Miley Cyrus’s weird, wacky world, that tribute comes in the shape of a large portrait of her granny in her younger years, centrally placed on Miley’s forearm. Sure, it’s a bit odd, but what would you expect from Miley? And besides, her grams does look a bit like Doris Day, doesn’t she?

Lady Gaga’s scalp tattoo

What do you do if you’re Lady Gaga and you are releasing a new perfume? Why, you shave half of your lower scalp and get a cherub tattoo, of course. Although it’s a Renaissance-style cherub to celebrate her Italian heritage (according to her tattoo artist), we largely approve of this one. It seems meaningful, and if she regrets it, she can always grow her hair out to cover it up.

Harry Styles’s abdomen tattoo

We’ve heard of having butterflies in our stomachs, but Harry seems to have gotten that saying a little wrong – he only went and got a butterfly tattoo on his stomach. Though butterflies are usually the tattoo of choice of young women on holidays in sunny party spots like Ibiza, Harry manages to keep his butterfly pretty masculine by making it look more like a zoological illustration than a cartoon.

Zayn Malik’s bicep tattoo

Harry’s bandmate Zayn, meanwhile, went full cartoon with his bicep portrait of girlfriend Perrie Edwards. Although none of the One Direction boys is unfamiliar with a tattoo parlour, Zayn really made waves when he debuted his ink – largely because Perrie reportedly hated it! He insists it has grown on her, which is just as well, as it’s not going anywhere any time soon.

David Dimbleby’s shoulder tattoo

Of course, it’s not just young rock stars who can shock us with their inks. David Dimbleby made headlines when he got his first tattoo at the age of 75 as part of a documentary that looked at Britain’s history at sea. He got a rather rock ‘n roll scorpion on his shoulder. Unfortunately for the TV presenter, commentators quickly noticed that his scorpion doesn’t quite have enough legs – his tattoo has six, and the animals have eight. Still, he seems to have had enough of the tattoo needle, as he’s said he won’t be returning to have it fixed.

Helen Mirren’s hand tattoo

There are few actors more universally adored than Helen Mirren. She lights up both stage and screen, and even when she leaves her show to swear at street performers, she does it with a grace and humour that makes us agree. Is it that surprising, then, that as a young woman, she got a tattoo on her hand, just to cause a fuss? We’re both surprised and kinda not by this one.

Samantha Cameron’s foot tattoo

As a student, Samantha Cameron got an adorable blue dolphin tattoo on her foot. She can usually get away with covering it up, but it does pop over the edge of her shoes every now and again. It does make you wonder if she would have done it had she known she would eventually become the Prime Minister’s wife and a successful businesswoman, but if it’s good enough for The Queen (or at least the actress who portrays her)…

Emma Stone’s wrist tattoo

The surprising thing about Emma’s tattoos isn’t that she has them or the meaning behind them. She got a matching tattoo with her mum to celebrate her mum’s triumph over cancer. No, the surprising thing about her tattoo is who designed them. Her mum’s favourite song is “Blackbird” by The Beatles, so when they wanted to celebrate, Emma wrote to Paul McCartney, asking him to draw two blackbird feet. He did, and they used the drawing for their tattoos.

These are the tattoos that have surprised us the most. What do you think? Should they keep the ink, or get them removed? Let us know in the comments.
