In the past week, we’ve been thinking about love and romance. Clearly the real life stories around the internet have been focussing on them, too. So here are some of the best real life stories about love, romance and friendship.

The real couples who met and fell in love at salsa dancing class

Cuban Fury

Cuban Fury, starring Nick Frost and Rashida Jones, seems like a silly comedy. He is an overweight, yet naturally gifted salsa dancer who gave up his gift years ago. She is his love interest, and he attempts to woo her, and get even with his love rival (played by Chris O’Dowd) with his dance.

Surely that is too goofy to be true? Not so, these three couples tell the Mirror. They point to the erotic moves, the sexy rhythms and the intimate touches of salsa, saying it’s a perfect recipe for finding someone special. After all, you can get a real sense of chemistry with all that Latin dancing, and you know they share one of your passions.

Two-legged Chihuahua and adorable fluffy chicken form the cutest unlikely friendship.. ever

Penny and Roo

One was bred to be part of an experiment. The other was abandoned in a park in the middle of February. But Penny the chicken and Roo the Chihuahua found each other at the Duluth Animal Hospital in Georgia, USA.

They instantly bonded, and their friendship has grown over the months. Roo lost his two front legs, so he wears a harness with two wheels so he can run around with his pal. That does cause problems for Penny, who sometimes gets run over by Roo’s enthusiastic bounding. She gets her own back at dinner time, though. When Roo gets fed, Penny makes sure to sneak a couple of bites when he isn’t looking.

It’s all good, though, because at the end of the day, all they really want to do is snuggle up with each other and have a good snooze.

Women join forces to fight back after being conned by scheming foreign grooms

Michelle Nawar

Michelle Nawar thought she had hit the jackpot. A younger, sexy Egyptian man she had befriended whilst working in his country had confessed he had feelings for her. His timing was poor, as she was just about to return to the UK, but she eventually came back, spending a month with him before realising she had feelings for him, too. Just a year later, in 2007, she paid the £1000 for a fiancé visa so he could join her in the UK. The wedding quickly followed. The first year of marriage was the stuff of fairy tales, but he soon began acting strangely, running up huge credit card bills and getting angry when she asked him about it. She couldn’t figure out what went wrong, but still, she was shocked when, in 2011, he got his UK passport then returned to Egypt without a word.

She was distraught, but she wasn’t going to take his treachery lying down. Instead, she created a Facebook page dedicated to helping the men and women who have been similarly scammed. They come together to share their stories and help stop this sort of thing happening to others. Although they admit it is fairly uncommon, Michelle points out that, with the visa costs, the cost of supporting him when he wasn’t allowed to work in the UK and the bills he ran up, she ended up being about £15,000 out of pocket – just because she fell in love with the wrong man.

Chef Jorge Collazo thought he was just going to have a great night out with his girlfriend, Maria, enjoying a Marc Anthony concert in the Barclays Centre in Brooklyn, NYC. The night was going well, and he went to relieve himself, as you do. But this was going to be a date with destiny. In the men’s toilets, he found a diamond ring on the toilet roll dispenser, along with a note. The note read, ” My dear Daniela d’Andrea, On this day Feb. 15, 2014, I want to give you This Ring as a Simbol (sic) of My Love. I will dedicate Myself to love you Protect you and Make you happy for as long as I live and More. You are the greatest love of my life. Would you”. At that point, the paper was ripped, leaving the question of proposal unasked.

Jorge waited in the loos for 10 minutes, reasoning the owner would soon realise he was missing some crucial jewellery and would rush back in to find it. But the owner never showed. When Jorge returned, he told Maria what he had found. She immediately insisted they find the owner, so he and his beloved Daniela could unite themselves in marriage.

So far, the owner hasn’t been found. But considering it has made international headlines, we’re sure the owner of the ring and Daniela might have quite the story to tell at their wedding reception.

‘We will never forgive her’: Woman who cancelled brother’s wedding because she didn’t like the bride is jailed

Ann Duffy

David Greatrex was due to wed his fiancée, Sandra Hardy, when an unexpected turn of events conspired to ruin their happy day. What was behind these events? David’s own sister, Ann Duffy.

Ann posed as Sandra and rang up the register office to cancel the wedding. David and Sandra managed to reschedule the wedding and finally wed 20 days later. On their “happy” day, Ann showed up and began verbally abusing the couple as they left the register office.

According to David, Ann was jealous and paranoid that Sandra was trying to take her brother away from her, and so Ann was fiercely opposed to their union. Ann, for her part, reportedly told her brother “I have saved you on the divorce” when she cancelled his plans.

Ann was recently sentenced to eight weeks in jail, and the bride insists that neither she nor her groom will ever forgive Ann for what she tried to do.

These are our favourite love stories from around the web. Some have been heart warming, but unfortunately many were not. So to keep you from feeling too sad, enjoy this video of a penguin who is in love with its zookeeper:
