The kids who built a floating football pitch

We’ll kick things off with this wonderful story. On the tiny island of Koh Panyee, Thailand, the local boys loved watching football on TV, but they had no space to actually play it. The entire village was just a series of floating wooden platforms in the sea. The local boys were watching the 1986 FIFA World Cup when they got a crazy idea: they would use old scraps of wood to build a football pitch and form their own football team.

And how did that work out for them? Well, watch this video to find out:

This disabled veteran regains the ability to walk and run

This video is pretty popular, so you may have seen it already. In case you haven’t, though, you should check it out now.

Basically, a US paratrooper damaged his knees and back so badly that doctors thought he’d never be able to walk unassisted and that running would be impossible. His weight ballooned as he basically gave up hope. Then one day he finally found some hope from seemingly the most unlikely yoga instructor: former wrestling star Diamond Dallas Page.

A young cancer fighter looks to build a centre for teens with the disease

Deryn Blackwell

Norfolk-born Deryn Blackwell was just 10 years old when he was first diagnosed with cancer. Just four years later, in 2013, he was given just weeks to live: his fourth bone marrow transplant didn’t seem to take, and his fragile body was trying to fight off three infections because he didn’t have an immune system.

So his family gathered around him, they planned a great funeral for him, and they waited for the inevitable. At the same time, he began making plans for a foundation and a camp that gave teenagers with cancer a great place to hang out while they got the treatment they needed. His mother assumed it would be his legacy. She never thought he’d be able to play an active role in building the camp.

Amazingly, however, his body began to heal, and the infections were being fought off. The bone marrow finally grafted, and his body was producing white blood cells. Soon, Deryn was well enough to start working more directly on the foundation and the centre. Called DoEvRYthiNg, the foundation isn’t quite yet a registered charity, but they’re working on it, and in the meantime, they are charting the course of its development on their blog.

Four sweet “tails” of animal heroes

Finally, we’ve got a video that runs through four stories of extraordinary animal heroes. Courtesy of Buzzfeed, these stories will remind you why dogs are man’s best friend, while also teaching you how llamas can help the elderly and how bloodhounds are protecting wildlife.

The video is, in short, four really inspiring stories in one lovely package.
