There are celebs we love because they embody talent and class: Dame Helen Mirren, Daniel Day Lewis and Meryl Streep come to mind. There are others we love because they are fun and hip, like Jessie J or One Direction. Then there are the train wrecks we just can’t turn away from – no prizes for guessing who we’re talking about there.

Then there are celebrities that, through their charm, talent and uniqueness, have us forgiving them everything, from awkward encounters to bad films to run ins with the law. These are the celebs we love for better or for worse.

Robert Downey Jr

Robert Downey Jr was part of the Brat Pack in the 80s, starring in films like Less Than Zero and Weird Science. He was feted as a bright young star to watch, and all the fame and partying went to his head. Throughout the 90s, he ended up running in with the law many times because of his well-known drug addiction – something he claimed his father started him on when he was just eight.

But after spending a full year in a substance abuse treatment programme in Los Angeles, he was released unexpectedly in 2000. People weren’t sure what to expect of this young star gone bad, but the creatives behind Ally McBeal, the TV show that defined the late 90s and early noughties, decided to give him another chance. And he killed it. He was charismatic, charming and humble. From there, small film roles followed and, as Hollywood regained its trust in him, larger and larger films.

Now, it seems, he can do no wrong, and that’s just fine by us.

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence is gorgeous and talented. But that’s not what gets her to the top of so many fan favourite lists. It’s because she is so incredibly human. Watching her get awards or talking to other films stars is like watching your best friend do it: suddenly, she’s in this world, and she is overwhelmed with excitement and can’t hide it.

Her interviews are works of entertainment art. Her answers are sincere, funny and incredibly relatable. She charms everyone but at the same time seems oblivious to the power she has. She’s just being herself, and she is clearly a warm, funny, lovely person.

Plus, no one falls on a red carpet better.

Nicolas Cage

Nicolas Cage famously changed his surname from Coppola because he wanted to make it in Hollywood just on his talents, not on family connections. Well, he certainly made it, but some question how, especially when they look at some of his film choices. He’s been in flop after critically panned film, including Captain Corelli’s Mandolin, The Wicker Man, Ghost Rider and the National Treasure series. And yet he keeps making films. How can that be?

Well, if you’ve seen  Raising Arizona, Face/Off, Adaptation,The Bad Lieutenant, or scores of other his other hit films, it’s undeniable that he is electric on screen. He has got the talent.

Really, it’s just his choices that seem to fall flat so very often. But we forgive him these failures over and over because when he’s on, he’s magnetic. Besides that, he stands by his choices. He makes them because they feel right, and sometimes they work and other times they don’t.

Because it’s one thing to be talented and charismatic, but it’s another thing to own up to your mistakes without beating yourself up. That’s why we’ll always be interested in Nic Cage’s next project.

Adele

If you’ve never seen Adele in an interview, you’d be forgiven for thinking that she was an untouchable, glamorous diva. But if you’ve ever heard her talk, you realise quite quickly that she is a sweary, funny, lovely girl. She’s up for a night out, but only occasionally because she’s a devoted mum as well. Basically, she’s not lost touch with her London roots, and she clearly wouldn’t have it any other way.

Nor would we.

These are just a few of the celebs we love for better or for worse. But who are the celebs you’ll forgive for just about anything? Let us know in the comments?
