A supermarket manager has won £70,000 on The National Lottery’s Lucky Fortune Scratchcard.
Deborah Maddison, 43, is from Houghton-le-Spring, and works as the deputy manager at The Co-Operative Food in Easington Colliery. She bought the winning £2 Scratchcard days before heading off on holiday.
She said: “I was heading off to Spain for two weeks so I bought my usual Lotto tickets for the weekends I wouldn’t be here.
“I also like to treat myself to a Scratchcard once a week, so bought two Lucky Fortune cards as they were the only ones left at the counter!”
After winning £4 on her first card, Deborah, went back to the staffroom, where she finished her sandwich. She then scratched off the panel on the second card. “I jokingly said ‘It’s my lucky day’ after my little windfall, and sure enough as I looked down I saw three crowns staring back at me.
“I knew instantly that I’d won big – it was plain as day, right there in black and white!”
The mum-of-one ran out of the shop in sheer excitement and yelled to her work colleagues, before ringing Camelot who verified that she was the winner of £70,000.
After this call, she then rang her husband, bus driver, Simon. “I called him the minute I’d put the phone down to Camelot,” she said.
“He is very level-headed and told me to calm down – he joked that the money wasn’t in our account yet and not to get too carried away!
“Simon and I have been looking to move into a new house for over a year now. I’m very picky and we just haven’t been able to find our ‘forever home’. It’s always been my dream to have a lovely new-build property which is modern and luxurious and ready for us to move into.
“We’ve only been back from our holiday a few days but I’m already lining up lots of viewings as we’d like to be settled in a stunning new house by the autumn.”
