John Crawford with his winnings

Three years ago in Scotland, John Crawford, 47, bet £100 that Germany would win the 2014 World Cup.

He placed his bet at a Betfred on West Blackhall Street, Greenock. The betting shop game him the odds 16-1.

However, following Germany’s victory over Argentina in Brazil, Mr Crawford, a road-sweeper, went to collect his winnings, but was informed that the odds for the ante post wager were actually only 10-1. This therefore meant that he would only be entitled to £1,100, rather than the £1,700 pay-out that he was expecting.

Understandably distressed, he spoke to his local Scottish paper, the Greenock Telegraph. They decided to step in, and took Mr Crawford’s case to the betting firm.

The paper reported on Wednesday that their campaign was successful and Mr Crawford has now been awarded his full winnings.

Speaking to the paper, he said:

“I’m so pleased.

“It’s all down to the Tele, so thank-you very much.

“If I hadn’t contacted you I don’t think I would have got my money.

“I just wish it hadn’t all happened in the first place!”

Bosses at Betfred originally argued that they had never offered 16-1 on Germany to win the competition. However, once the newspaper took the story on, they agreed to pay up in full.

A Betfred spokesman said: “We looked into it and we’ve decided to pay out the customer at 16/1.

“We would like to congratulate him on tipping the Germans.”

Mr Crawford has said that he plans to share his £1,700 winnings with his nieces and nephews.
