A former casino owner died after falling out of a hospital bed, reports the Rosendale Free Press.
Jennifer Horsey fell out of bed and fractured her hip, as there were no rails in place, an inquest heard.
Jennifer Horsey was “prone” to falling and had previously fallen out of her bed at Royal Blackburn Hospital the day before the fatal incident.
The Blackburn Coroners Court heard how no bed rails had been put in place to stop her falling in the early hours of June 12, 2013.
The inquest heard that the grandmother-of-eight had surgery on her hip, but she deteriorated and died a week later on June 19, aged 71.
Holly Wallace, her daughter, said that it was “common sense” for the bed rails to be put in for the former casino owner.
She said: “They had been up continuously before and there hadn’t been a time when they weren’t which I was pleased with.
“They were left down because my mum had gone for an X-ray. Whoever put her back into bed didn’t think to put the bars up.”
The manager of the hospital ward, Jennifer Hall, told the inquest that a bed rails assessment had not been completed. She described it as “a failure on the ward’s behalf.”
