Want to pinch a few extra pennies? Whether you’ve used our handy bingo review tool to find the best sites for free bingo with no deposit required or have started buying own brand, there are tonnes of ways to cut back and save more as a mum. If you’re looking for a little extra money-saving inspiration, these brilliant ideas and resources will help you stretch your budget further and get you more for your hard-earned money.

1. Try Netmum’s nearly new

Hand me downs are so much cheaper than brand spanking new babygrows, school uniforms, tricycles – you name it. Rather than splashing out on fresh-from-the-shop kit, economize and look for local sharing groups like Netmum’s nearly new section, Gumtree and Facebook communities. You’ll save a packet and keep your little one’s in good-as-new essentials.

2. Set up a babysitting circle

Instead of paying a babysitter £30 on top of the cost of your evening out, start a babysitting circle with your friends who also have children. When you go out, drop your little darlings off with a fellow mum or dad for free. When it’s their turn to go out, look after their kids in return. Win win!

3. Banish the brands

Huggies, Nestle, Coca Cola – buying branded products can cost big money. Go for own brand stuff instead and reap the financial benefits. They taste and perform just the same but cost substantially less – sometimes up to 50% less!

4. Pay them pocket money

You’ll know the drill. You go somewhere (anywhere) and, all of a sudden it’s: “Muuuuum, can I have this? Pleeeeease?”. Fail to splurge and you’ve got a tantrum on your hands. Giving your youngsters a small amount of pocket money may feel counter-intuitive, but next time your little one wants something you can say: “Do you have enough in the piggy bank?”. It will cut down on spending on useless items and help your child learn the real value of money.

5. Try a big freeze

Buying in bulk is a brilliant way to save money on stuff you use all the time, but if that includes perishables it’s not always possible. If you’re fortunate enough to have plenty of space in the freezer, take advantage, buy in bulk, freeze the excess and enjoy impressive savings. Keep an inventory so you always know what you have and what you’re running low on.
