FacebookThis year we are set to see some new faces at the Online Bingo Summit, as representatives for social media giants Facebook will be present.

The 8th Annual Online Bingo Summit will be taking place in London on 1st and 2nd May 2013. As you would expect all the leading professionals of the gaming industry will be in attendance.

Some of the other more senior representatives are set to include Google, 888, Paddy Power, BGO Entertainment, mFortune, Endemol and Freemantle Media to name just a few.

The social aspect of the online bingo marketplace has grown in leaps and bounds over the past few years. Facebook, Twitter and now Google+ are amongst the top social media sites on the internet and this social trend has certainly made potential investor sit up and listen – as they keep watch on this virtual space very closely.

Facebook appear to be continuing their push into online gaming in a big way. Many free game apps have been available to play on facebook for some time, but more recently they begun to allow real money apps to be played via their social networking site.

Operators 888 followed Gamesys ‘the people behind Jackpotjoy’ into real money bingo on facebook back in December 2012 with ‘Bingo Appy’.

At the time of the launch, the head of games partnerships in Europe at Facebook, Julien Codorniou, said: ‘Facebook is a great platform for playing games with your friends and we are really pleased to be working with 888, who have a strong reputation on both the quality and safety of their games’.

We have always been bombarded with online bingo advertisements on facebook. Whenever we log in we seem to be greeted by one sponsored ‘paid for’ advert or another promoting a gaming site. Today there was a whole array of them to choose from – Mecca Bingo, Gossip Bingo, Jackpot Party and Iceland Bingo to name just a few.

One of the current apps on Facebook which seems to be very popular at the moment is candy crush. I have had so many requests from my friends for this app, it is actually driving me insane. Notification after notification for app request sometimes makes me want to block all friends who play them -I cannot be the only one can I?

On Facebook, your name, profile picture, cover photo, gender, networks, username, and user ID are always publicly available, including to apps. Plus, all Facebook Apps also have access to your friends list and any information you choose to make public.

This means Apps have the ability to collect lots of info about us, without us even realising it.  Food for thought?

At the moment, Gamesys and 888 seem to have the ‘real money play’ monopoly on Facebook and it will be interesting to see how things will pan out in this UK social gaming meets real play arena. Unlike online gaming regulating, where operators can go to numerous outlets to licence their wares, Facebook will have the ultimate say about who can offer real money games from their social site.
