After a long bitter winter and a rain-soaked spring, we’ve finally reached a surprisingly great summer (at least for now). We’ve all rushed outdoors to enjoy the weather, and even the economy seems to be blooming in the sunshine. So while the grocery and appliance stores are trying desperately to restock their shelves with grills and fans, we’ve been thinking about what to put on our iPods.

Below are our picks for the five songs you must have on your summer soundtrack.

Get Lucky – Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams

Get Lucky sounds like it was one of the few cool songs made in the 70s (largely thanks to the work of Nile Rodgers, who is responsible for all of the cool songs of the 70s, on it) but it’s one of the first megahits of the summer. It doesn’t hurt that it appeals to most fans of music. If you are throwing a barbecue, your guests will love shaking their groove thing to this song, whether they like dance, funk, soul, disco or songs that have hooks that set up permanent residence in their brains.

Right Place Right Time – Olly Murs

The big and bouncy Right Place Right Time sounds like the song Olly Murs would have sung had he won X-Factor back in 2009. It is instantly catchy, easy to sing along with and has a message that is uplifting and cheerful. Whether you’re listening to this on the beach, by the pool, at a party or even stuck in traffic, you will get in the summer spirit.

Good Vibrations – Beach Boys

Since they first started recording music, the Beach Boys have been synonimous with summer and chilling on the beach. At least one song of theirs is required to feature on every summer playlist, and we’re choosing Good Vibrations. It’s a little more grown-up and sophisticated than their earlier songs, so though you still feel like you’ve been transported to a faraway beach where the sun always shines, you feel like it’s the kind of place that serves complicated cocktails and the food you see on MasterChef.

I Need Your Love – Calvin Harris ft. Ellie Goulding

There is a major trend amongst pop stars today to record electro-heavy dance songs. These songs rely on heavy bass, intricate drums and rhythmical, computer-generated bleeps and bloops to get the floor filled, and they do. I Need Your Love is a song like this but with a twist. Calvin Harris has built his impressive career with these kinds of songs, but he struck gold when Ellie Goulding came on board. Her voice, floaty and gorgeous like gauze curtains in a soft breeze, contrast beautifully. The mix of his digital sound and her organic style is the perfect sound for our modern times.

Wannabe – Spice Girls

A summertime blast from the past gets everyone dancing and singing like nothing else. That’s why we’ve included some Spice Girls here. And we’ve not just picked any Spice Girls song; we’ve picked Wannabe, their summer 1996 smash hit. You know loved Wannabe then, and you love it even more today. Everyone else does, too, so pop it on your iPod and enjoy. This is one pleasure you don’t have to feel guilty about!

No matter what you’re up to this summer, we think these five songs must be on your summer soundtrack, but this is an incomplete list. Obviously, there are plenty of great songs that we missed out. Which five songs have you put on your perfect summer soundtrack?
