Having a piece of art on the wall can really finish off a room, making it look properly decorated. But art can be incredibly expensive, even if you go to an affordable art fair. Luckily, there are certain aesthetic styles and art projects that can turn out really well, no matter what your artistic skills are.

Below are just five ways you can create your own work of art this weekend.

Paint an abstract masterpiece

Many people feel like they could have painted works by the likes of Rothko and Pollock, and to a certain degree, they are right. Their styles – giant, uneven blocks of colour and splatters of paint, respectively – can be done by just about anyone. So go to your local art supply store, grab some paints and canvas, and go to town.

If you’re nervous about your abilities, stick to black and white, as monochromatic paintings always look good. As you get more confident, you can branch out to brighter colours.

Create a simple colour study for next to nothing

This project only costs the price of a picture frame, so if you already have one lying around, it will be free. Simply go to a shop that sells wall paint, and pick up loads of paint chips. If you want something a bit calmer, choose shades of the same colour, and if you want something more vibrant, just pick up a bunch of bright chips. You can then arrange them however you like, and glue them on to the paper that comes inside the frame. Put the frame on, and you will have an instant work of art.

You could take it a step further, and cut out the paint chips to make even more designs if you want. You don’t even have to stick to picture frames, as they also look good glued to just about anything.

Use glue and cheap wood to make a textured painting

This is one of the easier projects, as there is little you have to do freehand. Start by buying a wood panel in the size that you want. Using a pencil, draw or trace the pattern you want directly on the wood. If you want an abstract textured painting, you can skip this step if you prefer.

Once you have the pattern in place, trace the pencil with glue. It can be hot glue, wood glue or any other kind that will maintain a high, rounded shape when applied. Let the glue dry. Once it’s dry, you can paint over the panel with whichever colour of paint you like.

Frame a bold wallpaper or fabric sample for instant artwork.

Like using paint chips to create a mosaic style work of art, you can also use free wallpaper samples to create a bold work of art. Simply get a sample of a wallpaper that has a bold pattern or colour scheme, and then place it in a frame. If you already have a bold wallpaper, you can just put up an empty, interesting frame up. The paper within the frame will then look like artwork, even though it’s just wallpaper.

You can create the same effect with patterned fabric.

Nod to British minimalism with a frame surrounding an empty canvas.

Last (and probably least), you can simply draw a line with a black marker pen around an otherwise empty canvas and call it minimalist art. That is what Bob Law, who has been described as the “founding father of British minimalism” did in 1969, with his work Nothing To Be Afraid Of V. That work consisted of a black square around a blank canvas, and in 2011, it was valued at £60,000 when it was up for auction.
