The last half of October might seem like an odd time to dream about holidays. After all, the summer holidays have been over for nearly two months, and the winter holidays will be here before we know it.
Still, there’s something about this period in between holidays that just puts us in the mood to daydream. With that in mind, here are our top 5 dream holiday destinations – at least for now.
Skiing and snow holiday – The Alps
The Alps aren’t the tallest mountains, but there is something that keeps drawing visitors in their millions. Maybe it is the fame of mountains like the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc. Maybe it is the countless high end ski resorts and seemingly endless snow-covered peaks. Maybe it is the indescribable beauty, as shown in this photo of Lauzière, in the French Alps. Whatever it is, there is something about the Alps that makes us want to slap on some skis. Then promptly take them off and have some hot cocoa.

Beach and walking holiday – The Great Ocean Walk in Victoria, Australia
A beach always has a certain something, whether its in Brighton or the Caribbean, but there is the Great Ocean Walk in Victoria is something else. It spans 65 miles of the south west coast of Australia, and it includes walks to challenge hikers of all abilities. Along the coast, you can spot koalas, echidnas, wallabies and a wide range of birds and other wildlife, and you can even find plenty of space away from other sunbathers.

Disney holiday – Tokyo DisneySea
There are 11 Disney parks around the world, and picking the best one usually just means going to the one that is closest or that has an offer going on. Still, theme park website Theme Park Insider chose Tokyo DisneySea as the best theme park of 2012 – for good reason. The lessons learned from building other Disney parks have been applied here: built in 2011,Tokyo DisneySea has incredibly immersive settings, richly decorated attractions and even some attractions that were designed for a potential park that might have been built in Long Beach, California, when Disney was trying to decide where to put their next California theme park (instead, they built California Adventure in Anaheim).

Camping holiday – Yellowstone National Park
Camping is like the Marmite of holidaying. You either love it or hate it. But when you do it in a site like Yellowstone National Park, which is mostly in the state of Wyoming, just about anyone can understand the joy of camping. Yellowstone is one of the oldest – if not the oldest – national parks in the world, coming under the protection of the US government in 1872. It is also the largest nearly pristine piece of land in the country, and visitors from around the world flock to see geysers like Old Faithful and discover stunning landscapes like this one, in the Midway Geyser Basin. Now that it’s been reopened, it is one of the best places in the world to get back in touch with nature.

City holiday – Bangkok, Thailand
Bangkok will host the most tourists in in the world in 2013 [links to PDF], according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index. It just barely edged out London to become the world’s most visited city, bringing 15.98 million visitors to Thailand, compared to London’s paltry 15.96 million. There are many reasons for this, including a still relatively cheap currency (the baht, which is worth about 2p), an emerging middle class in Asia and increased connections for air travel. Still, Bangkok really attracts so many visitors because it is the perfect mix of modern conveniences, ancient temples and amazing shopping and cultural activities.

These are our top 5 dream holiday destinations, but what do you think? Where are you dreaming of escaping to today?
