Unless you’ve been under a rock for the last week or so, you’ll doubtlessly have heard that ‘selfie’ has become the Oxford Dictionary word of the year.
A selfie is a photograph you take of yourself (normally with a smartphone or webcam) which you then upload to a social media site.
What you may not realise is that the ‘selfie’ gave birth to several offspring in 2013.
Like many an online trend, sub-genres quickly spread:
The Belfie (butt selfie)
Kim Kardashian tweeted a photo of her famous behind and the use of the phrase ‘belfie’ skyrocketed.
The Helfie (hairdo selfie)
Beyonce instagrammed a shot of her new hairdo causing a wave of interest in the term ‘helfie’.
The Funeral Selfie
A new tumblr blog was set up called ‘Selfies at Funerals’ (no, we’re not sure why you’d want to do that either). Cue a full-blown media storm.
The Bookshelfie (a selfie in front of your bookshelf)
Infinitely more tasteful than the Funeral Selfie, but sadly nowhere near as popular. Here’s hoping this one takes off next year.
From belfies to bookshelfies our infographic charts the rise of the sub-genres of ‘selfie’ – click here to see it in all its glory.
