Last year, a local newspaper ran a competition where readers were given the opportunity to nominate someone to receive a Christmas miracle. 73 year old Yvonne was nominated by her granddaughter, Kimberley Newbold, and her miracle was a simple request. She was diagnosed with lung and liver cancer and all she wanted was to be able to play bingo at her old local Gala club.

She got that and so much more; she received vouchers worth £100 to buy a new outfit for her prodigious return and on the night her table were treated to a two-course meal and a bottle of champagne. The memories of that night would come to mean so much more to Yvonne’s granddaughter though, as sadly Yvonne passed away in February this year.

“She passed away on February 12 and the bingo and trip to Matalan was her final outing,” said Kimberley, “When we speak of the last memories we have of Nan we all go back to that day at the bingo. It was amazing she was able to have that moment of joy.”

It’s really great to be able to share news of bingo having a positive influence when many news stories seem to only cover bingo players/callers that have stolen to feed their bingo habit. We hope to be able to share more heart warming stories like this with you in the future.
