The EuroMillions jackpot has made UK history by paying out the biggest prize to date. Two winning tickets for the eye popping, mind boggling sum of £91 million were purchased in the United Kingdom. Incredibly, the largest lottery amount ever paid in the country was £35.4 million.
At the time of going to press, only one winner has contacted the National Lottery to claim the massive prize, and it may be some time before the other realizes that he or she holds the other ticket.
The 300th EuroMillions draw had only two winners – both from the UK – on the numbers 11, 19. 34, 43, 45 and lucky stars 5 and 9.
The winners have 179 days to make their fortune.
“This is fantastic news,” said a spokesman for the UK National Lottery before the first player came forward to claim £45.5 million. “These two ticketholders have just banked the largest lottery prizes ever paid out in the country.”
“If either of the tickets belongs to a single winner they will soar into the top spot on the National Lottery rich list,” added the spokesman. “We have plenty of champagne on ice and we are looking forward to welcoming the lucky ticketholders to the National Lottery’s millionaires club.”
Later on in the day, Camelot, the UK lottery operator confirmed that a lottery ticketholder had come forward to claim half the money, and is now waiting to have the claim validated.
Camelot said that it was “extraordinary” for both players to originate from the same country, considering the size of the jackpot and the popularity of EuroMillions.
The winner of the previous big lottery in 2007 was Angela Kelly who said: “My win has enabled me to bring a great deal of happiness to my friends and family, which in turn has made me very happy. I wish the new winner the best of luck.”
Words of advice were also given by a 2005 £15 million lottery winner, Pat Griffiths who said: “Winning is incredible and I recommend the winners take a holiday, take time out before making any decisions. The money isn’t going anywhere, so take your time to decide what to do with your windfall.”
Camelot said that this was the first time that UK players had appeared on the EuroMillions lottery winner’s list. Interest alone on a win this big could reach around £2 million a year.
