A gambling addict burglar who tied-up, tortured and murdered an elderly woman for £30K in cash, has been jailed. Romanian national Vasile Culea, 34, had heard the elderly couple had £30K in cash somewhere in their home and he wanted to find it. Stalking out his victim, Culea followed 88-year old Kenneth Walker home from a betting shop where he then carried out his sickening attack.

The court hear how this was a premeditated attack, as Culea had confronted Mr Walker some days previously in a betting shop, demanding he hand over the money. Neighbours alerted emergency services the day after the attack after not seeing either Mr or Mrs Walker.
It’s alleged Culea had only fled the scene after a car had spooked him, taking off with a handbag valued at £300. Mr Walker died some months later however, the cause of death is not attributed to the attack. Culea admitted manslaughter of Mrs Walker and grievous bodily harm after initially telling the police Mrs Walker had slipped on a drink and he had stood on her chest.
Pathologist Dr Michael Biggs told the jury of 11 men and one woman: “I went to the kitchen and she was lying on her left side with her arms around her back, they had been tied together around both wrists and tied around the ankles. There was a black bag around her face and there was a cloth around her head and face and there was copious blood around the body. There was blood splatter on the walls.”
The trial had been informed of Culea’s rent arrears and spiralling debts due to irresponsible gambling. He will be sentenced shortly after jurors found him guilty of the heinous act.
