Greene King operates around 1,000 managed pubs and we could be seeing live bingo making a come back in across the country if they get their way. Although the gambling commission may be putting a stop to it, we wonder if they are stopping it for the right reasons? Personally, we at two Little Fleas would live to see Live Bingo make a comeback and this might be just the way to do it.

Currently pubs are allowed to host bingo nights under the ‘exempt gaming’ provisions within the Gambling Act 2005, however there are strict limits on stakes and prices. furthermore the licensees cannot charge a participation fee. Greene King aren’t satisfied with this though. they want to set up higher prizes as well as linked bingo games that will play nation-wide using electronic tablets or terminals.

A representative from Green King said:

“We applied for a licence to explore how we might improve the dame of bingo which is already played in many of out pubs. This would enable us to trial new games with our customers, giving them more choice and putting out pubs even more firmly at the heart of their communities. we were disappointed with the Gambling Commission’s decision not to grant us a license and we are therefore appealing that decision.”

According to licensing specialists Poppleston Allen commented that the GC likely refused the application over concerns regarding the development of commercial bingo in pubs and said that giving it the green light could open the floodgate to hundreds of other applicants. This is one of the reasons that Greene King are appealing, as they argue that there is a lack of evidence to support the Commission.
