Mecca Bingo Hall in Chadwell Heath closes.

On Sunday 15 June, 400 people gathered at the hall in the East End suburb as it opened its doors for the very last time.

Alongside playing bingo, the guests were treated to a free buffet and live entertainment.

The staff – many who will be moving to the sister club in Romford – were acknowledged with flowers and champagne for their service over the years.

Ex-members of the Chadwell Heath branch are being supplied with cabs and Oyster cards to alternative clubs in Romford and Hornchurch, as well as vouchers for free games.

Membership manager, Julie Abery, said: “It was very emotional and of course members were upset because they had been coming for years but it was very well received.”

The hall had been a bingo hall since 1966. However, following the end of the lease on the High Road building, Rank Plc – concerned by falling membership – decided it was not financially viable to renew the lease, according to a Mecca spokesman.

Ms Abery told the Post: “The admissions really dropped.

“We had about 1500 people a week coming through our doors [at the end] – but from experience I know there used to be nowhere to sit or even stand back in the day.”

She added the smoking ban and recession had been factors in the loss of members.

“Closing a club is certainly never a decision we take lightly,” she said.

“We are always very sad when a club closes as we know they are places in the community people feel safe.

“We hope the people of Dagenham can continue to enjoy bingo at one of the other local clubs.”
