A Simple Change Resulted in a Mega Windfall

There was a huge jackpot up for grabs in the EuroMillions draw on Friday 8th October, a jackpot of £174,236,090, and due to it being such a large prize, millions of people decided to try their luck – one of those was a lucky NHS hospital worker from Wales. A 53-strong syndicate from Morrison Hospital in Swansea have been purchasing tickets for the main Lotto draws for years now, but pharmacy technician at the hospital and head of the syndicate, Kim Owen, decided to switch from Lotto to EuroMillions at the last minute to see if they could scoop that top prize.

Sadly, they didn’t manage to win the jackpot, but they did match the five main balls drawn and 1 of the 2 lucky stars to win £118,041.10p! In total, four ticket-holders in the UK matched all five main balls and 1 of the 2 lucky stars, each taking home that six-figure sum. Unlike the other three winners, Kim Owens was part of an NHS syndicate known as the “The Pharmily Crew,” which meant that jackpot would be shared between 53 people.

After a challenging 18-months working on the frontline, every one of them will be taking home a lovely bonus of £2,227.26p thanks to the quick-thinking of Kim Owen. Kim said: “We don’t always play EuroMillions but because the jackpot has been so high, we thought it was worth a try as the prizes would be big enough for us to share. I usually end up buying the tickets as and when but on the day of this draw, I decided I was going to wait and buy all the tickets at once. I felt like doing something a bit different might bring us a bit of luck – and I was right!”

More Winners:

On October 12th, the EuroMillions jackpot had rolled over to £186,780,000…

…but again, it wasn’t won. Strangely enough, four ticket-holders from the UK match 5 main numbers and 1 of the 2 lucky stars just like the previous draw and the same would happen again on Friday 15th October, only this time they were able to win more – £3,679,293.50 each!

The number of players who have won a prize on the EuroMillions since 13th February 2004 is 3,267,769,911. The biggest jackpot winners from the UK were:

  • £170,221,000 on 8th October 2019, the winner stayed anonymous
  • £161,653,000 on 12th July 29011, winners were Colin and Chris Weir, Largs, Scotland
  • £148,656,000 on 10th August 2012, Adrian and Gillian Bayford, Haverhill, Suffolk were the lucky ticket-holders

The biggest single jackpot win to date was an unknown person from France, taking home €220 million on 15th October this year, knocking the previous jackpot winner of €210 million off his/her pedestal. In every EuroMillions draw, one lucky UK player is guaranteed to win £1million in the UK Millionaire Maker draw. There are prizes for matching two numbers in each draw too! If you play online or mobile, there is no risk of you losing a ticket and when you win, you will be informed via email and your funds will automatically be credited to your account!
