On Sunday 15th December, a popular Mecca Bingo venue in the South West of Wales opened their doors to the homeless with a free slap-up meal with all the trimmings. Many buses were hired to transport the rough sleepers from the city centre to the bingo venue where turkey, roasties and everything you’d expect to find on a Christmas dinner, were waiting to welcome them.
Those that took the bingo hall up on their generous offer were even transported back afterwards thanks to a Swansea charity – Where’s Doris. Not only did staff gave up their time to volunteer for the evening but regulars to the venue had been donating hats, gloves, scarves and duvets for the past week – all of which were handed out to those in need on the Sunday.
Heart Warming Gestures:
Speaking on Saturday, Kim Jones, manager at Mecca Swansea, said: “This Christmas season is the worst time of the year for the homeless to be sleeping on the streets. The weather is dangerously cold and it’s important for them to find shelter and food.”
Kim continued: “Not only that but Christmas is a time of giving which is why our employees have donated their time for this fantastic cause. We’re looking forward to chatting with any guests that visit the club this Sunday.”
In the New Year, Swansea Mecca will also be running a care for the community drive each Tuesday afternoon (starting the 7th). The ‘Ladies that Lunch’ event will involve many different local housing shelters for the elderly, of which will be treated to plenty of bingo games, lunch and as much tea and coffee as they can handle.
