Will Coral Sell off Gala Bingo Clubs?

A report in ‘This is Money’ stated that gambling group coral, could sell of their Gala Bingo clubs before floating their betting shops.

This now doubt will be worrying news for Gala customers up and down the UK. There has long been two main land based bingo competitors for years, Gala and Mecca Bingo. There are other bingo operators like Top Ten Bingo, but most of their clubs are situated mainly in south Wales, midlands and north east of England so they are not nationwide like Gala and Mecca.

As there are currently two main land based operators fighting for contention, it makes good promotional business sense for us the bingo player – as healthy competition between competitors is always great for the customer.

This is money have stated that Coral have taken the decision to try and offload their land based bingo clubs due to a number of factors. These included the addictiveness of fixed odds betting machines, the continuing uncertainty over the rate of online gambling tax and what insiders apparently are calling (the Andy question).

So rather than risking floating their betting shops under these circumstances, it is thought Coral are seriously considering selling their chain of Gala Bingo clubs.

There is still quite a lot of controversy regarding role their managing director ‘Andy Hornby’ played in the near demise of the HBOS bank. All very political stuff and a lot of tongue wagging behind the scenes that is for sure.

It would be a very sad day to see the Gala chains of clubs sold off and by the sounds of things this could happen in the not so distant future. If the sale does go ahead our bingo history will be changed forever more and not in a good way either.

With such turbulent times for the industry, who would be in the running to purchase the Gala chain? Mecca could be the main contender, or another smaller operator looking to expand their wares.
