Did you catch the Oscars last night? Everyone agrees it was a great night for film; after all, this has been a great year for films. Since everyone’s been raising their acting/directing/editing/gripping game, you’d think they’d be raising their fashion game for the biggest awards ceremony in film.
Well, here are five people who totally did raise their fashion game and five who completely missed the point. These are our picks for the best and worst Oscars fashion.
The winners
Lupita Nyong’o in Prada
The Academy Award-winning actress wore this stunning baby blue silk chiffon dress, which was custom-made just for her by Prada.

Jennifer Lawrence in Dior
Jennifer Lawrence and Dior have found a partnership that leaves everyone a winner: she once again looks arresting, and they have clearly found a new muse.

Lady Gaga in Versace
Lady Gaga makes a striking entrance in this gown, which is equal parts Old Hollywood Glamour and Android from The Future. Only Gaga can strike this balance and make it look perfect.

Cate Blanchett in Giorgio Armani
There is hardly an Oscars fashion round-up that doesn’t have Ms Blanchett at the top of the list, and with this ethereal look, it’s not hard to see why.

Emma Watson in Vera Wang
If you want to see how to do unexpected the right way, check out this look. The soft t-shirt shaped top, the grungy gun metal greys and the gothic style skirt make an unusual choice that totally works.

The losers
Kristin Chenoweth in Roberto Cavalli
We love her in Glee and on Broadway, but Kristin’s a bit too matchy-matchy with the Oscar statue in this dress.

Pharrell Williams in Lanvin
Shorts? At the Oscars? Really? There’s a time and a place for this kind of look, and the Oscars isn’t it. He’s really let his wife down: she (despite her own fab outfit) looks like his chaperone.

Julia Roberts in Givenchy
Maybe it’s the weirdly placed fins, maybe it’s because she’s slouching, but this dress just doesn’t really do Julia Roberts any favours. Of course, she is going through several family tragedies, so maybe it’s just all the stress.

Liza Minnelli
Liza Minnelli is a living legend, so she barely has anything to prove anymore. That may be why she just popped on some luxe pyjamas before heading to the awards ceremony. We do love the hair, though.

Anna Kendrick in J. Mendel
The fact of the matter is, this dress is just too busy. The cut-outs, the sweeping pleats, the tiered skirt with a thigh-high slit – it grabs attention for all the wrong reasons.
