We’re going to admit it: we have no idea why the Met Gala ball is such a big deal in the American celebrity calendar. Maybe it’s because the guest list is decided by Vogue editor and fashion goddess Anna Wintour. We don’t know why, but it is, and everyone who is anyone pulls out all the stops to make a Big Fashion Statement when they go.
Big Fashion Statements are always a risk. Either they are spectacular, or they fall so completely flat that everyone is left stunned. Today, we’re looking at the latter.
Below are some of the worst dressed celebs at the Met Gala.
Lena Dunham

We love Girls, and we love how Lena is happy doing her own thing. But that fabric is so bulky and stiff that it adds more to her frame than should be there. Plus, the beading thickens her waist.
Anna Wintour

Anna Wintour is the editor of Vogue. How did this happen?
Lupita Nyong’o
Source

We’re getting a reference to Josephine Baker in this outfit, but it’s a bit too OTT for the Met Gala. It’s less Roaring 20s Elegance and more Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby on Opium.
Bradley Cooper

Bradley Cooper is gorgeous. Gorgeous men in tuxes should not be a difficult nut to crack. And yet, here he is, looking more like his Hangover co-star Zach Galifianakis than like his usual yummy self.
Shailene Woodley

Divergent actress Shailene Woodley admitted eating clay as part of a detox diet, and it seems to have affected her ability to dress well. It looks like she swept up the trimmings of everyone else’s dresses to make her own.
Kristin Stewart

Kristin Stewart has often successfully brought a bit of gun-metal rock to otherwise staid events. But this is what happens when the rock station cuts out and turns into white noise.
Solange Knowles

Some people disagree, but we actually like this sherbet orange shade on Solange. It’s just the shape, draping and bottom of the dress that we hate.
Kate Upton

You’ve probably already seen photos of this dress. It made headlines all on its own, thanks to its bizarre milk-maid-in-mourning look. Plus, she looks like she’s about to have a wardrobe malfunction, which undoubtedly got a lot of people hot under the collar.
Chrissy Teigen

Um, speaking of collars, this was model Chrissy Teigen’s look. If she had had sleeker hair or if that collar didn’t look so much like an Edwardian dog cone, we’d probably love it.
Kirsten Dunst

We appreciate the humour in wearing the Death Star on a gown to one of the most prestigious events in the US social calendar. We get the joke, but that doesn’t make the dress pretty.
Rita Ora

Rita was going for glamorous and sexy, we think, but it just comes across badly. Who recommended the strappy thigh-high boots and the slit all the way up, Rita? Because we all need to have a word with that person.
