The Atlantic Lottery Corporation have moved to legalise online gambling in Canada.

The prospect of online gambling being introduced in Canada has been raised this week.

Atlantic Lottery Corporation, which operates Canadian lottery games, said that it was “time for a discussion” about legalising online gambling.

In its annual report for 2013-14, called “The Competitive Reality”, the corporation noted that the landscape of gambling has significantly altered in recent times. For instance, they highlighted that in the last year there has been another decline in video lottery earnings, and that the firm has struggled to sell lottery products to adults who are under the age of thirty.

However, despite this, overall lottery profits bucked a downward trend last year, rising to $368.4 million. This is an increase of approximately $7 million from last year.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation has seen its profits steadily decline since 2008-09, when the corporation recorded profits of $398 million.

The Atlantic Lottery Corporation said:

“In recent years, we’ve seen an explosion in gaming technology and accessibility. Along with it came the introduction of more than 2,500 unregulated online gaming providers from places like Malta and Gibraltar.

“Atlantic Canadians are spending millions of dollars annually on these gambling sites that operate outside of any regulations established by our governments. Unlike Atlantic Lottery, those sites’ profits don’t stay in the region to support our communities.”

According to the CBC news website, the corporation handles the legalised gaming activities for the local governments of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland and Labrador, while government-run lottery organisations in British Columbia, Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec provide the online gambling options.

“We face a growing challenge in attracting younger adults; those players who grew up in the digital world playing games of strategy and skill, with leaderboards and player profiles who will continue to game online, often with off-shore illegal gaming providers,” the corporation added.

“We have to do a better job, as an industry and a company, of providing younger adults with entertaining options. That means new styles of games and new experiences unlike what we offer today.”
