A Japanese advocate of legalising casinos has called for Japanese politicians to allow local gamblers to be allowed in, following reports in Japan that Japanese nationals will be banned from casinos.
The rumours have been fuelled by reports that the health ministry want to ban civilians from gambling, because of their fears of addiction, according to Reuters.
Toru Mihara, a professor at the Osaka University of Commerce, originally aided Japanese politicians in drafting the casino bill.
Last week, he told reporters that the government should tackle the issue of problem gambling via counselling, as well as other means, rather than imposing a ban.
Mr Mihara’s comments suggest that the debate over the casino bill, which is currently in parliament, may be protracted.
He was also asked by reporters whether he thought casino gambling should be limited to foreigners, to which he responded by saying that “It would be entirely out of the question.
“I would estimate that about 80 per cent of all visitors will be Japanese. The remainder will be foreigners.”
Japanese Prime Minister, Shinzo Abe, has said that legalising casinos will be a key feature of bringing greater economic growth to Japan, and lawmakers are currently discussing his bill to allow this type of gambling.
