France’s professional football body has punished French footballers who breached betting rules.

The Ligue de Football Professionel – which operates the French football league – has this week announced that it will be enforcing sanctions for dozens of players who have been found to have breached rules on betting.

In total, 87 footballers have been punished for breaching the rules which the Ligue de Football Professionel had laid out along with the Fédération Française de Football.

This follows an investigation – which is still on-going – that was led by the French gambling regulator Arjel.

The sanctions against the footballers range from suspensions from playing to fines of between €500 and €1,500, as well as unpaid work to be carried out at their respective clubs.

The most serious offenders were categorised as “Group Four” offenders. These players made negative bets against their own teams. These players have been fined and will be required to carry out unpaid community service at their clubs.

The next worst tier was “Group three” offenders. These players placed bets totalling more than €500 on various French football games, while players in “Group Two” placed bets totalling less than €500.

It has been illegal for French footballers to bet on professional football matches since February 2012, when regulation was introduced by the French Football Federation and the Ligue de Football Professionel.
