A leading figure in the gambling industry in Portugal has backed his government’s move to legislate against online gambling.

The Portuguese government’s decision was praised by the President of the Portuguese Casino Association, Jorge Armind.

Mr Armind said: “It is good that online gambling is getting regulated and becomes a legal form of gambling.”

However, Mr Armind voiced concerns about the legislation. “The means chosen may not have been the most appropriate,” he said.

He believes that the Association should have exclusivity in the gambling concessions.

“Our position has always rested on the right of concession holders to exclusivity in online gaming, indeed, in alignment with the concession that was attributed to us in 2001 and for which we paid many millions of euros at the time,” he said.

The Portuguese government have moved to enact legislation that will come into force later this year. According to the Portuguese government, the legislation is based on European practices, European Commission recommendations, and a study of comparative legislation.

The legislation will grant online gambling firms licenses when they meet certain technical, financial, and reputation requirements, as laid out by the government.
