A leading American sports media outlet is embracing gambling as part of a major revamp.

The publication, Sports Illustrated, is moving its business toward mobile, fantasy sports and gambling, as part of a revamping process, according to the publication Mashable.

“We want to build a successful mobile plan so that the consumer will consume our content across any device including desktop and come away with a positive experience with the right advertising built into it,” Sports Illustrated publisher Brendan Ripp said.

Sports Illustrated is viewed in the America Media as the home of long-form sports journalism and revolutionary photography. Such attributes helped the magazine become the most widely read sports magazine, circulating approximately 3.1 million copies weekly,

The publication is re-launching its Fan Nation vertical with a new app that allows users to challenge friends to single-day matchups and gamble money. It was built in conjunction with development company TopLine Game Labs.

Sports Illustrated’s new gambling app will allow players to challenge friends to bet money against one another’s fantasy teams, with the publication taking an undisclosed percentage of each bet made.

Sports Illustrated is a flagship brand of its parent company Time Inc.
