A new three-part documentary series on the world of gambling has been commissioned by BBC One.
The working title of the series is The Bookies.
The program will go behind the scenes at Coral, one of the UK’s biggest high street and online bookmakers.
The series aims to explore the workings of gambling, a pastime that is enjoyed by approximately 8 million people in the United Kingdom each year.
The series will follow the lives of punters who gamble thousands of pounds, to those who place smaller bets on sport events like football matches as well as television series.
The shows is hoping to discover why gambling is so popular during a time of economic recession.
Emma Willis, head of documentaries for BBC1, BBC2 and BBC4, said: “Betting shops are a key part of the high street and an unwavering part of modern British life.
“The Bookies will take a compelling look at how the industry works, the everyday realities of life on the betting floor and why we’re betting more as a nation.”
The production company behind the new series, Boundless, said that they are “very excited about this major commission.”
Patrick Holland, Managing Director of Boundless, said: “Betting is something that millions of British people take part in, yet we know very little about the world and how it operates. The series will engage with the excitement, the characters and the issues from this major industry.”
