An American columnist has claimed that online gambling is safer than gambling in person.
Elizabeth Brown made her claim in an editorial for the online newspaper, the Digital Journal.
The gambling industry in the US has faced a fierce legal battle for nearly twenty years trying to convince lawmakers to allow gambling online.
It was not until 2013 that Congress finally agreed that gambling online was acceptable.
Several States have now gained approval to launch US based online gambling sites, including New Jersey, Nevada and Delaware.
Ms Brown argues that online gambling is safer for three reasons.
First, she writes, that gambling online means that you are in a safe place, whereas often casinos are dangerous places.
Second, she writes, it’s easier to stop. “Walk into any casino in America and you’ll find you have a hard time walking out again.” Whereas, she argues, online gambling is a lot easier to exit.
Last, she writes that because you are in control of your environment, it is easier to remove yourself from playing, by setting up controls to keep yourself in check. For instance, she writes: “You can set an alarm for yourself to limit the time you play. You can step away from your computer and go take a walk to clear your head.”
