Mr Negreano

A leading poker player has called for leniency to be given when poker tournament directors hand out punishments.

Daniel Negreanu expressed his unhappiness with punishments on his blog last week.

Mr Negreanou, who is known as Kid Poker, wrote about how a player in a €1,000 Estrellas Poker Tour tournament stood slightly up from his chair before a hand was dealt to take a picture of poker’s all-time money leader with a fan.

The dealer then mucked the amateur photographer’s hand, after the cards had been dealt, as he was not sitting down.

Kid Poker wrote:  “I’m asking, I’m pleading for a change in focus in these types of situations. More leniency, more understanding, more player friendly. Less rigorous, less harsh, and less cold blooded,”

Mr Negreanu, 40, wants tournament officials to examine the rule breaker’s intent before deciding to punish them. He said that heavy punishments may discourage some recreational players.

In his blog post, he writes about less experienced players getting too excited.

He writes, “Often amateur players get excited in the moment and don’t even realize what they have.” Enforcing a penalty on such a player, is, he writes, “downright silly.”
