The world’s leading poker star has earned more this year than David Beckham and Roger Federer, the Mirror reports.

Poker star, Daniel Negreanu, earns more than sport stars, David Beckham and Roger Federer, as well as top golfer, Phil Mickelson.

In 2014 alone, Negreanu has made more than £4 million, which is more than the earnings of many of the world’s highest earning athletes.

Interestingly, in 2013, the top ten PGA golfers earned $52,775,979; the top ten ATP tennis players earned $48,566,433; while the top ten ranked poker players in the Global Poker Index earned $47,870,710.

These figures clearly demonstrate that when it comes to the prizes involved, poker ranks right up there with the most lucrative sports in the world.

Daniel Negreanu is arguably the most recognizable face in poker as well as the main face of Team PokerStars – a group that also includes Rafael Nadal, and former football legend Ronaldo.

Surprisingly, Negreanu has now taken the unprecedented step of posting his year-to-date earnings on Twitter, which amounts to £4.2million ($7.3million) in pure profit

So how does this compare with other sports stars?

Unfortunately, there are not too many people who are that forthcoming with their 2014 statistics, so the Mirror, used earnings from 2013 to calculate the sums.

In 2013, golfer Tiger Woods earned £7.6 million, suggesting that the greatest golfer of all time has the capacity to earn more than Kid Poker. However, golfer Phil Mickelson did not come close to Negreanu, earning £2.9million. While tennis star Roger Federer was the biggest tennis earner, making £4.1million, coming just below Negreanu. Football legend, David Beckham’s earnings were dwarfed by Negreanu, with the former England star making £2.9million in earnings.

What makes these figures even more remarkable is the fact that Negreanu had to personally pay $2.9million to enter the events from which he achieved a return of $10.2million.
