Turkey has blocked hundreds of illegal gambling websites, Two Little Fleas can reveal.
Over the past five years, the country has blocked a total of 440 websites, the country’s gambling regulator revealed.
The Turkish National Lottery and the Presidency of Telecommunication and Communication (known as the TIB), which is Turkey’s telecoms authority, together warned Turkish gamblers to avoid unauthorised sites.
The two organisations have been working together to rid the market of illegal sites.
During the past five years, the National Lottery demanded action against more than 440 websites after tracking foreign betting and gambling websites that were being accessed in Turkey.
The state-run lottery required the cooperation of the TIB, and asked the telecommunication regulator to shut-down 93 websites in 2009, 119 websites in 2010, 110 websites in 2011, 88 websites in 2012 & 30 websites in 2013.
Such pages were offering online gambling services to Turkish citizens, despite not being licenced to do so.
In the country, terrestrial gambling premises were closed down in 1997, which forced many local punters who still wished to bet to move to the internet.
The TIB were given authority to crackdown on online gambling and illegal betting sites by the Turkish government in November 2007.
