Learning doesn’t need to be boring, and playing games online doesn’t have to be a waste of time. If you’re worried about your little darlings wasting their hours on the web with little educational merit, we’ve found a few great compromises for kids in KS1 and KS2.
The internet can be a brilliant learning resource which makes discovering new things fun! In fact, many educational experts think that we should all start preparing for a more digital educational future. So if your little ones love a spot of Candy Crush or Angry Birds, why not try out a few of the web’s more entertaining learning resources? (You might even have fun too!). Here are 5 of our favourites…
CBBC/CBeebies
There’s lots to play with on the CBBC website and it’s packed with kids’ favourite characters and TV shows to make the whole experience feel like play time. It’s not as whizzy as some of the other options on our favourites list, but with new games popping up all the time, there’s plenty to keep young ‘uns entertained and engaged. When it comes to educational content, there is plenty to find, though some games are purely for fun. From driving through Australia and leaping over crocodiles (while answering geographical questions) to a game that helps kids to understand Dyslexia, there’s plenty of good stuff to be found!
National Geographic Kids
If your child is obsessed with animals, this is a brilliant site to encourage little Attenboroughs in the making. Crammed with amazing pictures and incredible facts, the National Geographic Kids site also boasts some brilliant videos and games to teach small explorers all about geography and the natural world.
Wonderopolis
How do crickets talk? How many emoticons are there? Do dogs really eat homework? What colour is camouflage? How can we know if an animal is colour blind? If your bundle of joy is full of weird and wonderful questions about the world, this is the website for them. Full of expert explanations, written for children to understand (with handy hover-over definitions for tricky words) this is a fabulous website for the eternally curious.
Pottermore
Harry Potter might not seem like the most educational subject out there, but if you want to inspire your child’s creativity, this immersive and weirdly addictive website is a brilliant tool. The whole site concentrates on encouraging children to read instructions carefully and embrace their creativity, making it a seriously fun way to pick up comprehension skills and develop concentration. Wingardium Leviosa!
Innocent Kids
They may be selling smoothies, but in the meantime the Innocent team have put together some pretty great games and online resources for their youngest demographic. We particularly enjoyed playing match the animal with its poo. There are tonnes of fun ideas your kids can enjoy offline too, from yummy child-friendly recipes to all sorts of other fruit-themed fun. Great if you want to encourage a young cook, or simply get more fruit into your little ones.
