There’s nothing like good old fashioned fun to get the whole family playing together. Forget about iPhones and tablets, sod those fancy scooters with three wheels, whether you’re off on holiday or just mucking around in the garden this summer, here are 5 old favourites to share with your kids (when you’re not playing a relaxing game of no deposit bingo, that is!).
1. Yo-yos
What’s not to love about a yo-yo? They’re bright, they’re colourful and you can get better than your siblings really quickly if you practice! You may have had hours of yo-yo fun as a child and we’re willing to bet that your young ‘uns will enjoy them just as much (and so will dad). There are lots of handy online videos and guides to help get them started too. Try:

- Walk the dog…
2. Frisbees
This classic toy was invented in 1938 when a couple tossing a cake pan back and forth on Santa Monica were offered 25 cents for their “game”. The next incarnation was called the Whirlo-Way and then the Flyin-Saucer and finally the Pluto Platter before a new company created the very first true Frisbee in 1957. These awesome flying disc are still super fun today. We dare you not to enjoy 15 minutes of Frisbee on the beach. It’s pretty much impossible.
3. Spud Guns
What’s not fun about firing tiny chunks of potato at your friends and family? Around in one form or another since the 1930s, these very silly toys are brilliant for charging around the garden or park with, engaged in some serious potato-based warfare.
4. Hula Hoops
Round and round and round and round – these aren’t just great fitness gizmos, they’re also amazing fun. How many spins can you do? How many spins can granny do? How far can you roll your hoop? It’s ridiculous how much fun you can have with a thin ring of plastic.
5. Sandpits
It’s like having a beach in your back garden. Which means there’s very little better than a sandpit, particularly when you’re under 10 years old. This might not be such a bit hit with parents (endless amounts of sand in the house, endless threats about not throwing sand at your brother etc.) but it’s an enduring playtime favorite nevertheless.
