You may not be Toni or Guy, but how hard can a home haircut be? Whether your little one’s a difficult wriggler in the hairdresser’s chair or simply laid back enough for a DIY do, here are the whys, why nots and how tos of cutting your kids’ hair.

To Cut or Not to Cut?

This is the first question you need to address – do you dare brandish those scissors to give your little darlings a trim? What if it all goes horribly wrong and they look like tiny escaped lunatics for the next 6 weeks? What if you accidentally snip them? What if the blighters won’t sit still? What if they hate your haircut?

The benefits are also pretty obvious – it’s infinitely cheaper to give your bairns a DIY do – and you’ll avoid the stress of carting them off to the hairdressers and pleading with them to sit still. And that’s before your hairdresser refuses to give them a trim because they’ve somehow managed to pick up nits at playgroup again.

So really, the questions are:

  • Do you trust yourself to do a decent job?
  • Will it matter if the haircut’s not straight from Vidal Sassoon?
  • What’s your monthly budget like?
  • How well behaved are they at hairdressers?
  • Do you have the right kit?

How Old is Too Old?

There is one more question you might want to add to this list: How old is too old for a home haircut? Most mums and dads will keep their babies looking chic for the first couple of years, then leave things to the professionals. However, depending on how handy you are with the clippers and scissors – and what look your young person favors, you might well be able to do the job just as well at home.
