Are you in the mood for a new look for your home, but are tragically short of cash? Don’t worry! There are plenty of things you can do to redecorate for practically nothing. We’ll show you eleven of the best.

Pile all the cushions in one area

If you have a few cushions scattered around a room, you can create a more inviting space by piling them all on one sofa. That sofa becomes cosy, and the rest of the room looks less cluttered, changing the feel instantly.

Move furniture away from the walls and into a grouping

If you want to really give your room a facelift, try shifting furniture away from the walls and into groups. Cluster chairs and sofas to create a chill-out space, and pull the table out from the wall to create a dining area in the same room. As a bonus, moving furniture just a few inches from the wall can make a room feel bigger.

Use colourful food as decorations

This is a trick we see all the time in magazines but almost never put into practice ourselves. But why not? Just buy the colourful fruit, veggies, pasta and other non-refrigerated foods you use, and use them to fill jars, vases and other clear accessories. Then place them out where people can see them.

Cluster decorative items by theme to create a punch

Sometimes you can make the biggest impact, just by shifting where your accessories live. Gather up all your accessories, and cluster them by themes: colour, material or style. Then cluster those accessories around various rooms. Colours can make a huge impact on a shelf or mantelpiece. A cluster of one style can make the top of a chest of drawers more interesting. And a cluster of wooden and stone items can give a warming feel to an empty space.

Go to the park or the wood to find accessories

If you live near a park or some woods, you have instant access to some of the chicest decorative items going. You could go to a shop and buy a bundle of pinecones or sticks for loads of money, or you could go to the park and pick them up for free. Show them off in clear vases or bowls to bring a bit of the outdoors, in.

Create a focal point around a big mirror, painting or window

The best decorated rooms all have one thing in common: they have a focal point. If you have a big mirror or piece of art and a TV console, you can create a mantle-like focal point on the side of a room farthest from the entrance. If you don’t have that sort of stuff lying around, you can treat the window like the focal point. Decorate it with lamps, candles or knick-knacks to draw the eye toward it.

Raid the kitchen cupboards for decorations

This is a secret décor technique stores don’t want you to know: you can use your old plates, glasses and other dishes as decorative items. Cluster mismatched glasses together and fill with flowers to create an unusual flower arrangement. Display plates with other colour-coordinated items to create a cool colour-pop effect. That way, you’ve got more accessories without spending a pound.

Cover up an ugly headboard with a length of pretty fabric or a blanket

Sometimes, we get tired of our bed’s headboard before we can afford to buy a new frame. Luckily, you can simply drape a length of spare fabric or a spare throw blanket over the headboard to create an entirely new look. Just be sure to tuck the ends under the mattress to keep the fabric in place.

Frame pages from your old A to Z for instant art

You’ve got a mobile phone, so you probably don’t need that old A to Z or AA atlas anymore. Cut out some of the pages and frame them for some instant, cool artwork. You can even choose maps of places that mean something to you, if you like.

Tape carpet samples together to make a custom rug

Carpet companies, like wallpaper companies, will often give away free samples to give customers an idea of how particular pieces of flooring will work in their homes. CarpetRight, for example, will send up to four carpet samples to customers for free. So gather up a load of carpet samples, and tape them together with duct tape or another sturdy tape. You’ll then have a customised rug, completely for free.
