It’s strange, isn’t it? After just a few years on the planet, we take for granted the amazing things on it. We all know deserts are sandy, sparkling blue water is gorgeous, forests are green, and we just get on with our lives. We see them all the time on TV, in films and in books and magazines. Yawn.
From time to time, though, some people are stopped in their tracks by a completely stunning, surprising sight. If we’re all lucky, those people have cameras with them, and they take amazing photographs that show how weird – how alien – our own planet can be sometimes.
Below are just 10 of these photographs.
You probably recognise this image as a photograph of a dandelion head, but isn’t interesting how alien small things look when they are blown up and you can really see the details? Suddenly, dandelion seeds look like a cluster of bird/reptile hybrids.
This explosion of colour might at first glance look like a painting, but it is in fact a photograph of the sun rising over Angkor Wat, the Cambodian temple, and its reflection in a pond.
This abstract photograph is actually of a cluster of cacti in a botanical garden. The photo was black and white, and then the photographer converted it to its negative to create the stylised pattern.
Believe it or not, this is an extreme close up of broccoli, specifically Romanesco broccoli. It’s an odd-looking variety of broccoli, but the photo is another example of how weird everyday items can look when you magnify them.
This is a photograph of Laguna Colorada in Bolivia. The lake’s name translates to Red-Coloured Lagoon, and that is pretty much the most accurate name in the world. It gets its red colour from red sediment and the colour of algae that grow there. Still, no matter how natural it is, it just looks a bit alien.
This is a photograph of a creature called Spirobanchus giganteus, or the white Christmas tree worm. It is a marine worm that lives on coral reefs throughout the world, but in this photo, it looks like an interstellar bush on some far-away planet.
Another photo that looks like a surrealist painting, this captures how the waves wash over coral rocks at Coral Cove Park in Florida.
A drop of water sits perfectly poised on a peacock feather, as green circles swirl in the background. The soft lines and smudged colours give this photograph an elegant, other worldly feel that rises much higher than the simple items used to construct the image.
This is a photograph of a paint brush, if you can believe it. With macro photographic techniques and a lot of imagination, the photographer turned a tool into a work of art.
Finally, we end on a photograph that is reminiscent of photographs of Earth from space. So is it an odd angle of Earth, or perhaps some other planet? Of course not! It’s a rear view mirror with road salt stains on it, obviously!
These photographs are so amazing, they really remind us how lucky we are to live on such a diverse, gorgeous planet. So what do you think? Which of these photos is the most amazing? Which one really looks out of this world?
