Have you ever noticed that all your favourite celebs seem to do the same pose on the red carpet? That’s not an accident. They’ve figured out the best way to pose for photos so they look slim and glamorous, no matter what angle the photographer is shooting them at or what they’re actually doing.

Today, we’re going to look at photos of celebs to see how to pose for photos like a celebrity.

Work on your posture.

Posture is the foundation of looking great in photos. When we relax, we tend to slump, and that squishes up our less than toned bits, making them all look bigger than they are.

So stand up straight. Imagine a string pulling your head toward the ceiling – this should feel like you’re stretching your back by pulling your head away from your shoulders and your shoulders away from your middle.

Next, roll your shoulders back. Push them up toward your ears, back as far back as you can, and drop them back down. This helps with the posture, and it also helps emphasise certain, ahem, attributes.

You will now look long and lean, which is the first thing you have to do to look great in photographs.

Think about your face.

When we smile really big but keep our faces pointed down, we develop what looks like a double chin. It is super easy to avoid, provided you don’t worry about feeling natural while you pose.

Pull your head as far away from your shoulders as possible, and poke it out a little, like a turtle.

Now lift your chin a bit. Not so much that you are making people look up your nose. Just enough that you create some space between your neck and your chin. Think about it this way if you feel too silly: photographs are flat images. They can’t actually depict a 3-D version of what’s happening. So if you push the things you want to emphasise toward the camera and push the things you want to look smaller away from the camera, the camera will take a flat photo of a woman standing there with a slim neck and a face that draws the eye just a bit more than others do.

Find your angle.

This one is going to take a little practice because you need to find what works for you. But the principle is this:  when we’re shot straight on, we tend to look like blocks, but if we turn fully to the side, everyone gets an eyeful of our tummies. So you need to figure out that sweet spot for yourself. Just twist in front of the mirror until you find it, and do that the next time a camera comes out.

Start with your head. Turn your face slightly to one side or the other of the camera (this is what celebs mean when they say, “my good side”). Faces look better when they’re not shot straight-on, so just give your head a little twist or a tilt.

Create those lovely curves.

Have you ever noticed that all celebrity women always have one foot crossed over the other. They don’t all need the loo all the time: they are creating the illusion of more and better curves.

You can do this yourself by crossing your legs to make your hips look more proportional and your legs look slimmer and more feminine. If you want a smaller waist, pop your hands on your natural waist, where your abdomen is smallest. Squeeze in just a bit to make it look smaller. If you want to shrink your hips, place your hands on them to cover them at their biggest point. Then drop one hand down just a bit and leave the other in place. The asymmetrical hand placement makes your lines look longer and your pose look more natural.

Bonus points if you push your arms back. Again, push back the things you want to look smaller, as the camera will be tricked into making your pose look flat. And when it’s flat, no one will know that you’re basically doing a chicken dance to look hot.

Push your butt back to slim your thighs.

If you don’t want to cross your legs, you can make your legs look slimmer by pushing your butt back. Stand with your legs slightly more than shoulder-width apart. Keep your posture, but bend forward at your hips just a bit. Put your hands on your hips all sassy like, then perk up your butt. This makes your thighs look much smaller by both pulling them away from the camera and pushing other things forward. That will create an optical illusion effect that really shrinks your thighs.

Sit like a pro.

Sitting in a photograph is tricky business, but you can make yourself look better, even if you’re stuck on a sofa. Start by scooting to the edge of the seat, and sit up as straight as possible. Twist yourself to the side a bit so the camera can see some of the side of your leg, and tuck one foot behind the other to create a more feminine line. Suck in your tummy as much as possible and put your hands either on your hips, as above, or on the chair itself it enhance your posture.

Remember, too, to do your turtle face to keep your neck and jaw looking well-defined.

Look at the camera for a second longer than you think you should.

We often forget that even with our lightening fast digital cameras, we still need to give the equipment time to capture our images. Hold your pose and keep your eyes open wide a second longer than you think you should, just to make sure the camera’s shutter closes with you looking amazing.

Learning how to pose for photos like a celebrity is not easy. It’s not simple, and it sure isn’t natural. But if you practice doing your poses, you’ll see the difference in your photographs. Even if you do feel like a turtle face who’s twisted to the side to present your butt to people. The photograph will look like a gorgeous, slim woman looking lovely.
