Technology is amazing. We have tablets that allow us to access the whole of human knowledge, talk to people on the other side of the world, document the world around us and much more. But what do we really want to do on these devices? We want to play fun games.

Luckily, plenty of iPad games developers have created awesome games, and many of them are free to play. Below, we share with you our picks for the 10 best free iPad games.

Air Hockey Gold

Air Hockey Gold works with both the iPad and the iPhone, but the controls are easier to use on the iPad. The game works in the same way as the real version: you use the paddle to try to get the puck into your opponent’s goal. You can play against the computer, and there is a very good two-player option as well, which makes it stand out against the other free iPad air hockey games.

Flockwork

The one word every review uses for this game is ‘addictive’. Flockwork is like Snake, the addictive maze puzzle that seemed required to be on every early PC and mobile phone. Flockwork is cuter, faster and a bit more challenging, however. You are a herding dog, and your job is to herd your flock of sheep into the goal areas (indicated by the checkered squares), whilst dodging dangers, keeping track of all the sheep and collecting as many stars as possible.

Crimson: Steam Pirates

Crimson: Steam Pirates is a turn-based strategy game, much like Civilisation or Risk, but with much more action. After all, you are the captain of a pirate ship, so you set its course and then have to fight and plunder in order to survive. In addition to fighting other ships, you also have to avoid zepellins and submarines, giving the game an especially challenging dimension.

Frisbee Forever

Frisbee Forever is a bright, cheerful break from the often drab, ugly free games on offer. In it, you play Frisbee, trying to get the disc to hit stars and other goals. Each level is a different, vibrant scene: you start in a fairground, and then you move on to a beach, and Old West ghost town and more. Throughout the 100 levels, you can collect 100 Frisbees featuring a range of fun designs.

Real Racing 3

Racing games are much of a muchness, right? Well, Real Racing 3 says “not really.” It is a free game with upgrades and boosters you can buy in-game, but you don’t have to. You can just enjoy racing ‘real’ cars on famous tracks from around the world, made all the more realistic with the fantastic graphics. The game also has a time-shifted multiplayer mode, so you can play against friends, whereever they are.

Tiny Tower

In Tiny Tower, you build and maintain a, well, tiny tower that your tiny people live in. You have to provide them with food, places to live and more. In that way, it is like a simplified version of The Sims. Still, the charm in this game lies in the 8-bit style of graphics, which makes everything just slightly cuter.

Fowlplay HD

This game is juvenile. There’s just no other word for it. You are a pidgeon, and your goal is to poop on as many people’s heads as possible, whilst keeping away from trees and grabbing power-ups. But like most juvenile things, it is undeniably fun. Get this for the kids, and play it when they’re doing homework or in bed.

Pilot Winds

Pilot Winds is about a a skiing penguin – what else do you need to know? Apparently, it is inspired by Tiny Wings, a game where you control a fat bird sliding down hills. In Pilot Winds, however, the penguin is a daredevil, so you have to perform tricks and get some real speed to get the most points.

Ninjump

In Ninjump, you control a ninja, using your finger to get the ninja to leap forever higher between two buildings. As he jumps, the ninja must kick obstacles, get killer squirrels and birds before they get him and dodge enemy throwing stars. It is simple, but massively fun.

Parsec

Parsec is one of the most highly rated old-school shoot ‘em ups in the App Store. It looks like Asteroid and other first-generation arcade games, but that is only one reason why it is so loved by iPad gamers. It makes the most of the iPad’s finger controls, and it has 20 timed levels that make coming back to beat your high score pretty much unavoidable.
