Layering is very trendy right now, which is handy. The air is getting colder, but most of us still aren’t ready to pull our heavy winter coats and boots out just yet. Just because you’re piling the layers on, however, doesn’t mean you have to look dowdy. So curl up, grab a blanket, and let us show you how to make the most of the layering trend that is so hot right now.
Use thin layers.
Your bottom layer is mostly about prepping the canvas. Get a thin, plain top – or maybe a classic striped top – that fits a bit closely to your body. It will give you the warmth without excess bulk. Next, add a thin shirt and top it off with a jacket or a cardigan.

Make it obvious you are layering.
You have to give people clues that you are layering, so it looks intentional (an outfit looking intentional is the entire difference between fashionable and schlubby). So if you want to layer two or three long-sleeved shirts and jumpers, push up the top layers’ sleeves so that the bottom layers’ sleeves are clearly visible, too. That will make you look laid back and chic, rather than bulky.

Belt it up to keep your shape.
Of course, there are times when you want to have layers but you don’t want to look like a pile of clothes left on your bedroom floor. If you throw a belt around the middle, you’ll show your waist off whilst still being warm. In fact, this works well for a party look: take a flared 50s-style skirt or dress, top it with a thin shirt and a thin knit cardigan, and belt it at the waist. Add snuggly opaque tights and some nice shoes, and you have a great party outfit that won’t have you freezing on the journey to the venue.

Work in a contrasting pattern or colour.
Monochrome looks are always sophisticated, but if you are tired of blending into the black and navy-clad crowd, you can work in a bright pattern or pop of colour. It’ll lift your spirits and help you stand out from the crowd, which is exactly what fashion is all about.

Play with materials and textures.
Layers need to look distinct to look intentional. You can make sure layers are distinct through colour, but you should also try a mix of materials and textures. A chunky knit scarf, a jean jacket and a cotton top look great together because, even if they are all cotton, they have different textures that keep them looking very distinct.
This tip is especially key if you do want to wear just one colour from head to toe. When an outfit is all one colour, a mix of textures and materials is the only thing that will give it any visual interest.

With these five tips, you should be able to make the most of the layering trend right now. You don’t even need to buy anything new. Just be willing to try new combinations, and you’ll soon figure out how to best work this trend to suit your own style.
