Washing Day: How to Spend Less on Your Laundry

1. Wear more, wash less

In the Western world we suffer from a pretty chronic case of over-washing. All-too-often we just chuck anything worn in the wash after just a day. This is not just bad for the environment and terrible for the longevity of your clothes, it’s also going to ramp up your laundry costs.

Essentially, if it ain’t broke – don’t fix it. If there are no visible stains and no nasty niffs, the item of clothing in question can go back into the cupboard for another round. Jeans, skirts and trousers in particular can be worn numerous times before they need a wash. Start being more economical with your washing and you’ll see laundry loads decrease rapidly, saving you time, energy and money.

2. Cool it, buster!

Unless you’re dealing with tricky stains, turn that temperature down. There’s no need to do regular washes at 60 degrees, switching to a 30 degree cycle will save you a packet when your energy bills come through. Even going for a cold wash is effective. If your clothes simply need a refresh, a cold cycle will work just as well as a warm one. Cool it down and slash your bills.

3. DIY detergent

Even supermarket own brand washing powder can be pricey, but making your own is super easy and super cheap. Here’s a helpful recipe which won’t cost you more than a couple of quid.

4. Big loads, smaller bills

Save up all of your laundry until you have enough to complete a very full load. This will save you water, energy, money and cut down on the number of loads you wash in a week.

5. Dry outside

Wait for a dry day to do your washing. Tumble dryers, whether at home or at the laundrette, cost a bomb in energy. Hang your washing outside or rig up a line inside in winter to get your laundry dry for free.
