Today is St Patrick’s Day, so we thought we’d give our celebrity gossip an Irish twist. Today, we’re looking at the things some Irish celebrities – and those with Irish roots – are getting up to.

Bono reportedly gave Malala Yousafzai an iPod – loaded only with U2 songs

This funny tale comes from Christina Lamb, Malala’s official biographer. According to Lamb, Bono wanted to show his appreciation of Malala’s work by gifting her an iPod. In a move that perfectly illustrates both his own enormous ego and the typical 50-year-old man’s understanding of teenage girls’ tastes, he only put his own band’s music on the MP3 player. Malala was apparently confused but gracious, Lamb said. “As a normal teenager, she’s into Justin Bieber,” Lamb told the attendees at a literature festival in Dubai, “as well as doing impressions of Mr Bean and wishing she was taller. She had no idea who U2 were.”

In an interview with GQ Magazine, the IT Crowd and Bridesmaids actor admitted to doing a bit of creative fundraising back in the day. Before he was famous, he took a job cold calling people to raise donations for an environmental charity. After trying it the standard way, Chris decided to have fun with the job. He started making up endangered species, like the Tiger Swan and the Dolphinwhale, to catch peoples’ attention. And it worked.

He said, “[The Tiger Swan] made me the most money. I raised more than £300,000 on that day, just by myself. A swan with the stripes of a tiger. Very rare. Lives in Mali. People would say, ‘I’ve never heard of it!’ and I’d be like, ‘Well, it’s f**king rare! If they were everywhere, we’d be fine! I wouldn’t have called!” He went on to add, “The Dolphinwhale was the size of a whale, but it loved humans. Loved swimming with people, so would always get beached. Very sad.”

Kendall Jenner, the star of Keeping Up with the Kardashians and now it-girl model, has set the tabloid world aflame by having lunch with a guy who is not Harry Styles! Kendall, who has Irish ancestry, had been dating the One Direction heartthrob for a hot minute, before they called things off. Since then, she has been spotted having lunch with someone who is not famous, and this has made entertainment news headlines all over the world.

Colin Farrell look alike racks up a nearly $5000 bar tab

James Martin not Colin Farrell

Okay, this link is extremely tenuous, but the story is too fabulous to not include it. James Martin is a semi-professional Colin Farrell look alike who reportedly used his genetic good fortune to weasel his way into Upper West, a club in Chelsea, London. There, he was given the VIP treatment, but when staff finally realised he wasn’t the film star, they demanded he pay the $4800 bar tab.

The look alike insists that he didn’t drink anything at the club and didn’t realise they thought he was Colin Farrell, so the bar tab couldn’t possibly be his to owe, but let’s be honest – you would do exactly this sort of thing if you could, wouldn’t you?

These are our favourite stories surrounding Irish celebrities, those with Irish ancestry and one guy who kind of looks like Colin Farrell. We hope it’s got your day off to a great start, and enjoy St Patrick’s Day!
