This uncharacteristic spate of glorious British weather may have us all basking in the beautiful sunshine, but there’s danger in all this loveliness. We all know that too much UV is really bad for our skin. The harm strong sunshine can do is even more serious when it comes to our kids. Yet protecting little ones from the sun isn’t always easy…
Heading inside for a spot of on line bingo in the afternoon might be your favourite way to avoid catching too many dangerous rays but, in the summer, kids just want to be frolicking outdoors -without the irritation and discomfort of regular suncream top ups. If you want to make protecting your children’s skin easier this summer, we’ve got 4 fun tips to help!
1. Use a spray
It might sound daft, but using a spray sun cream is so much more fun than the usual “pour out, rub on” variety. If you’re applying sun cream outdoors, why not turn the event into “target practice” or a sun cream fight? You could even draw a target on your little one’s tummy to aim at! Messy, maybe. But much more fun.
2. “Can you reach your…?”
Here’s a fun way to trick your kids into wearing lots of sun cream. Every child likes a challenge, so put a dab on their palm and ask “Can you reach…the middle of your back?” “The top of your feet without bending your knees?” “Your bellybutton with your eyes closed?”. You’ll have them covered in SPF 50 in no time!
3. Make patterns
O.K. So sun cream isn’t quite as much fun as face paints but you can still draw fun patterns with the stuff! Draw on tiger stripes or native American war paint – just make sure you rub it all in afterwards.
4. Look for unusual sun creams
There are some more unusual sun creams around if you know where to look. Amazon and eBay are a good source of things like colored sun sticks – just make sure you check the ingredients and the SPF (you want at least 50) and always have a proper back-up sun cream to fill in those gaps. We’re particularly taken with Glittertots Sparkle Screen – yes, it does exactly what it says on the tin. We kind of want some for ourselves…
