There’s nothing better than a den in the garden in the summertime. They’re great for shade, super fun for camping out on warm nights and utterly brilliant to build. With your little ones happily occupied outside, you’ll have more time for peace, quiet and a spot of free no deposit bingo! Here’s some denspiration to get you started…

1. The classic den

Old blankets, a washing line tied between two trees, pegs, a wing and a prayer – this is how all of the best dens are made!

2. Posh tipi

If you’re feeling a little classier, these DIY tee-pees are surprisingly easy to build from a simple timber frame and some fabric. How you accessorise it is totally up to you!

3. Teeny tiny tipi

This mini tipi is also built from a simple timber frame and some old corrugated plastic – perfect for small gardens, small people and for keening the rain out.

4. Outdoor boudior

Perfect for your little fairies, you can buy these structures and take them outside on sunny days or make your own with a large hoop, a big billowy fabric curtain sewn around it and a hangable, triangular top.

5. Classic tipi

This is the stuff cowboy and Indian dreams are made of. You might want to buy this type of tent, but if you love your DIY you can find very helpful tutorials online!

6. Extravagant raj tent

If you want to pull out literally all the stops, you could go large with a great big raj tent. It’s a significant project, but with enough know-how and commitment it can be done (and the grown ups can use it once the kids have gone to bed!). Here are some instructions!

7. Blanket castle

If you’re lucky enough to have a nice big tree in your garden, pegging (or sewing) together some old blankets and materials then suspending them from one point makes a really romantic little den.

8. Blanket bunker

If you have any useful garden bits and pieces lying around it’s really easy to build a semi-circular structure and cover it in fabric!
